First Time Cruisers

🚢 FIRST-TIME CRUISERS

Your First Cruise Starts Here

Your first cruise should feel exciting—not overwhelming.

From choosing the right cruise line and ship to understanding stateroom options, dining, travel documents, excursions, gratuities, and all the in-between details, there’s a lot to learn before you sail.

That’s where I come in.

At Beyond the Shift Travel Co., I’ll guide you through the cruise-planning process so you can spend less time stressing over the details and more time looking forward to your vacation.

🚢 CHOOSING THE RIGHT CRUISE

Not every cruise is the same—and that’s a good thing.

Different cruise lines, ships, and itineraries can deliver completely different experiences. Some are ideal for families, some are packed with entertainment and activities, and others lean quieter, more refined, or more upscale.

When helping you choose, we’ll consider things like:

  • Your budget
  • Who is traveling
  • Departure port
  • Length of vacation
  • Destinations you want to visit
  • Activities and entertainment
  • Dining preferences
  • The overall vacation experience you’re looking for

The goal isn’t simply to find you a cruise—it’s to help find the right cruise for you.

🛏️ CHOOSING YOUR STATEROOM

Your stateroom can make a big difference in your cruise experience—comfort, convenience, and even how rested you feel.

Common cabin categories include:

  • Interior — Typically the most budget-friendly option.
  • Oceanview — Includes a window or porthole with an outside view.
  • Balcony — Gives you your own private outdoor space.
  • Suite — Generally provides additional space and may include extra amenities depending on the cruise line and ship.

Location matters too (midship vs. forward/aft, deck level, proximity to elevators, and more). We’ll review your options so you understand exactly what you’re booking before you book it.

🪪 PASSPORTS & TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

Travel-document requirements can vary depending on your citizenship, itinerary, ports of call, departure location, and cruise type.

I’ll help point you toward the appropriate official requirements for your particular trip so you know what you need well before sail day.

Ultimately, each traveler is responsible for obtaining and carrying the documentation required for travel.

Never assume that what worked for someone else’s cruise will work for yours.

💳 DEPOSITS & FINAL PAYMENT

Many cruises can be reserved with a deposit, with the remaining balance due by a specified final-payment date.

Deposit requirements, cancellation rules, payment schedules, and fare conditions vary by cruise line and reservation.

I’ll make sure you understand the key dates and terms tied to your booking—no surprises.

🍽️ WHAT’S INCLUDED?

One of the best things about cruising is how much can be bundled into one vacation.

Depending on your cruise line and fare, your vacation may include access to things such as:

  • Accommodations
  • Select dining
  • Entertainment
  • Pools
  • Activities
  • Youth programs
  • Fitness facilities
  • Transportation between ports

However, not everything onboard is necessarily included in your cruise fare.

Specialty dining, alcoholic beverages, certain nonalcoholic beverages, Wi-Fi, spa services, shore excursions, gambling, shopping, gratuities, and other experiences may involve additional charges.

I’ll help you understand what’s included with the cruise you’re considering so you can compare options accurately.

🍹 DRINK PACKAGES & 📱 WI-FI

Many cruise lines offer beverage and internet packages.

Whether they’re worth it depends on the cruise line, your habits, the length of the sailing, and the package rules (including what’s included and what isn’t).

Don’t automatically buy every add-on you see.

Ask me about the available options and we can look at what actually makes sense for your vacation.

🏝️ PORTS & SHORE EXCURSIONS

One of the best parts of cruising is waking up somewhere new.

Depending on your itinerary, you may have opportunities for beaches, sightseeing, snorkeling, historical tours, food experiences, adventure activities, and much more.

Excursions may be available through the cruise line or other providers.

We’ll discuss your options, timing, and the important differences you should understand before making a decision.

🧳 WHAT SHOULD I PACK?

Your packing list will depend on your destination and cruise line, but you’ll generally want to plan for:

  • Comfortable everyday clothing
  • Swimwear
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Evening attire appropriate for your sailing
  • Sunscreen
  • Medications
  • Chargers
  • Travel documents
  • Luggage tags and identification
  • A small carry-on for embarkation day

Cruise lines also maintain lists of prohibited and restricted items, so I’ll point you toward your cruise line’s current policies before departure.

🚗 GETTING TO THE CRUISE PORT

Whenever practical, consider arriving in your departure city at least one day before your cruise.

Flights get delayed. Traffic happens. Cars break down. Weather changes.

The ship isn’t going to wait because your flight was delayed.

For many travelers, arriving early provides peace of mind—and gives you time to start your vacation without racing the clock.

I can also help you explore pre-cruise hotels and other travel arrangements when appropriate.

🛳️ EMBARKATION DAY

It’s finally cruise day!

Before leaving for the terminal, make sure you have your required travel documents and anything else your cruise line instructs you to bring.

Your cruise line may also have an app that provides access to check-in information, schedules, dining, onboard activities, and other features.

I’ll help you know what to expect before you arrive so you can board with confidence.

💵 GRATUITIES & ONBOARD SPENDING

Your cruise fare isn’t necessarily your final vacation expense.

Depending on your cruise, you may need to budget for:

  • Gratuities
  • Beverages
  • Specialty dining
  • Wi-Fi
  • Shore excursions
  • Shopping
  • Casino spending
  • Spa services
  • Transportation
  • Hotels before or after your cruise

I’ll help you look beyond the advertised cruise fare so you can build a more realistic vacation budget.

🛡️ TRAVEL PROTECTION

Unexpected things can happen before or during a vacation.

Travel protection options may be available for your trip. Coverage, exclusions, eligibility, benefits, and terms vary by plan.

I’ll provide information about the travel-protection options available for your booking so you can review the coverage and make an informed decision.

❓ HAVE QUESTIONS? ASK ME.

There really is no such thing as a stupid first-cruise question.

Wondering which dining is free?

Don’t understand gratuities?

Can’t decide between an interior and a balcony?

Wondering what you can bring onboard?

Never been outside the country?

Ask me. That’s what I’m here for.

You don’t have to become a cruise expert before taking your first cruise.

That’s my job. Your job is to enjoy it.
